January 4 - Birth of the Hawaii State Association of Electrical Workers; officers included  LU 1357 Business Manager John Han as vice president. Delegates from LU's 1186, 1260 and 1357 attended.

 

1983

Local establishes scholarship program for its members and their children.

 

1987

NLRB certified LU 1357 as the bargaining representative for employees of Micronesian Telecommunications Corp. on Saipan.

 

1990

GTE Hawaiian Telephone Co., Inc.

 

1997

GTE purchases Oahu Wireless; its employees become part of LU 1357's bargaining unit. The purchase provides the opportunity for members to become involved in the cable TV market, with the potential for more jobs and advancement for the members as OW's market expands.

 

2000

Bell Atlantic and GTE merge into one company renaming GTE Hawaiian Telephone Co., Inc.  into Verizon Hawaii, Inc.

 

2005

Verizon Hawaii sold to the Carlyle Group, Carlyle renames company Hawaiian Telcom Communications, Inc.
